Last days in quarantine (23.-25.3.2020)

I’ve been too busy to write here daily. Things are happening quite quickly in the society and the work. We try to react and plan our actions as well as possible. I have to admit that planning for the future is really hard at the moment. Few years back we were able to predict our future in business quite well for the coming 12 months. Now we are struggling to predict for the next 12 days.

Life in quarantine has had certain routines:

  • Wake up 7.30. Way too long in bed going through the news and social media. Breakfast.
  • Work starts 8.30. I’m sitting alone in my daughters room (I don’t have a desk at home nor at the office) and having online meetings back to back all day.
  • Lunch around 12.00 with my family
  • Work continues until 17.30 – 18.30
  • Sauna (every night!)
  • Dinner
  • Some work, blog, emails etc.
  • Off to bed around 22-23. Sleep around 23.30-24.00 (too late, I know!)

Repeat.

I haven’t been doing any sports during the last two weeks. Feels strange, but I didn’t want to tease the virus.

Yesterday we had something special: we were tested again in drive in test station. They are developing a 15-minute quick test and needed corona positive patients. Luckily all the family got tested and now we are waiting for the results. Hopefully all the family would have the antibodies and we could live pretty normally from this day on.

I spent yesterday evening on a project that hopefully helps one local company to do some business during the epidemic. Last day and not sad

Today is the last day of my 14-day isolation (one day I was self-quarantined). Time has passed actually pretty quickly. But we are still happy that tomorrow we are able to do our groceries by ourselves. Thanks for everybody who helped us during these two weeks!

Tomorrow we thought to evacuate ourselves to the summer house. All of you judging this decision without knowing better, let me explain:

  • We are healthy and not spreading the virus anywhere.
  • On the way there, we do the shopping at the same store where we would do if staying at home.
  • Our summer house is in the next town – not 1000 km from home. It’s only 55 km from our home, actually. An hour with a car.
  • In case we would for some random reason get COVID-19 symptoms, we would go to the exactly same hospital than if we would be staying at home. So we would not bring any extra pressure to any small town hospital.

I know many small cities are afraid of bunch of remote workers invading the area and possible bringing the virus and flooding the small hospitals. This is not the case with us and I wanted to clarify this.

Before taking off to the summer house, I should have a video interview to the States. Local news site, CNET, is making a story about the Oura study. I’m happy if I can help! I wan’t to emphasize that I do not have any hidden agenda with Oura. I’m just a happy customer and volunteer to help if they are able to create an algorithm to spot the COVID-19 before actual symptoms. Every single day with less social contacts matters.

Day 10 and 11 in quarantine

First things first: we are healthy and doing fine. This is the most important thing.

Weekend has been actually pretty relaxing after a hectic week. Cutting some fallen trees (wet and windy winter has been bad for our trees), washing the car (we learned in Switzerland that car should be washed every Sunday and I’ve been trying to hold on to that. Also now, although our car has not moved a single meter since ten days…) and watching the kids play outside. And sauna of course. Every night!

We decided that summer is coming and also carried all the outdoor furniture to our terrace. I hope it’s not snowing anytime soon!

We also made some pizza in the Weber barbeque.

While we were watching the news, we spotted a familiar guy: my father in law. Their drug, Traumakine, could save lives during the corona virus, but it’s still in research phase and now we hope for ”fast track” in getting a permit to be used in worst cases. It would help many people! Somebody even started a petition to speed up the process. You can help by signing it (in Finnish) here:

One of the highlights were this song that I received from my friend and colleague Maria Saaristo (aka. Corona Records). She wrote and recorded a corona themed song (in Finnish.) I find it hilarious! Listen it below:

Tomorrow we have only three days to go with this isolation. On Thursday morning we should be ”free.” Let’s see what that means by then. Noting surprises me anymore.

10th day in quarantine

I know. It’s going to last long. Although we have only five days to go, I prepare for months in remote working. So, it’s better to get used to it.

Today was a tough day. I work also at the board of Rukakeskus, which operates Ruka and Pyhä, skiing resorts that belong to the largest skiing resorts in Finland. Although we believed that actual skiing would be safe, we decided to be responsible and close the resorts. Decision will have a great impact on all companies in the area and it was not easy to make.

In addition to this, I worked all day preparing my own company for the worst case scenario. Not one of my favourite days at work, I have to admit.

As the day ended, we felt that after nine days in quarantine, we needed some company. We ended up having aperitivos with Petsku and Saija and the after dinner drinks with Ville and Miia. Both on a video call, of course. Both encounters were full of laughter, despite the rough day.

9th day in quarantine

Three last days have been hectic at the work. 12-14 hours in front of my laptop and speaking on the phone. Luckily things start to settle a bit.

Today I even had some empty slots in my calendar and time to go through my backlog. Reading emails among other things.

Kids are trying to get back to rhythm with school. There’s a big difference between 9 and 14 year old kids – at least in terms of workload. 9 year old was done with all the task in an hour and 14 year old worked all day. Best home work for the 9 year old was: clean your closet! And he did it 🙂

We are not running out of food yet, but still we needed some refill. Specially for the fresh stuff, like salad etc. Luckily my twin brother Kimmo was able to do the shopping for us. Thanks for help!

Local stores are wramping up their home delivery operations. And that is excellent news!

Since we are not able to shop at the local Market Hall (which is my favourite place to shop normally), I was super happy to hear that Herkkunuotta (fish shop) were able to deliver to our home. We ordered fresh shrimps, salmon for sushi, mousse made out of white fish roe and archipelagian bread. Today was a fish day!

Also my favourite Gelateria (Italian icecream shop) Nuvole started deliveries today and Angelo brought us some kilos of his specialties. Cioccolato, Fragola, Vaniglia and Stracciatella!

Around 17.00, as I was about done with all my meetings, I made a mistake and laid down on my bed to check emails.

I woke two hours later… lack of sleep during the last few days, maybe!

As I walked downstairs, I found the rest of the family gathering for the dinner. They prepared the best sushi dinner one could imagine! And for the dessert: Italian icecream.

8th day in quarantine – surprise by Kaskis!

What a day!

Yesterday I wrote (in Finnish) about the situation in restaurant business (and hospitality business in general). Situation is really bad. I try to encourage everybody to use local services as much as possible!

I talked with my friend Erik from a local restaurant (one of the best ones!) and I mentioned in a blog later that I promise to eat seven days in a row in Restaurant Kaskis and Kakolanruusu if I just could taste their signature dish, Kalaympyrä (special fish plate).

They took it seriously and today, as I was having my online meetings, my son run to my ”office” and told that some men came to our terrace.

And what did I find??

Erik and Topi where there, outside in the rain and making those dishes to us! They made five plates and served a perfect glass of Riesling with it (kids got grape juice).

What a surprise! This is the spirit we need in this crisis. Never give up!

I am prepared to take care of my part of the challenge. As soon as I get out, I’ll take my family five days in a row to their restaurants. Can’t wait it!!

One week to go… take care, keep the social distance and BUY EVERYTHING  you can from your local entrepreneurs!

7th day in quarantine

Week has passed by, really quickly, to be honest.

Stop working and hug me!

I have not had time to:

  • watch Netflix
  • listen to audio books
  • clean the carage

…or for any other thing that I thought I would be doing. Work days have been really intensive. Today I was in front of my laptop basically all day from 8.30 until 23.00. This is a funny situation, because finally my family sees what I do for living. Their perception:

”You keep on speaking on the phone and telling the same thing to everybody.”

Yes, my daughters perception is pretty right. Management is communication and it is repeating the same thing over and over again. As you get bored to the topic, then you might have a chance that others heard you.

Our work with my management team is true crisis management at the moment. Market around us changes everyday. Today we got a new law, borders will be closed, events or gatherings for more than 10 people are not allowed and more restrictions will come. Year ago we were able to predict pretty well 6-12 months ahead. Now 12 hours seems optimistic. This is crazy.

Highlight of the day was the food delivery. Now we have some good stuff for days to come. We have been eating very well during the quarantine, thanks to my 14-year old daughter, who is a true Junior Chef. I’ll post some pictures of her cooking at the end of this post. She’s great!

Today I gave only one interview, but it was a half an hour talk to a TV Show called Elixir. Should be coming out some day soon. I just came from the sauna and then the interview started on Facetime. I was red and sweating. A true corona patient.

We also got clarification for the duration of the quarantine: it’s full 14 days. Well, that’s fine, since now we have some great ingredients for cooking and kids will start school (online) also tomorrow. That’ll bring some rhythm for their days as well.

Health? Today I had some cough, but my kids said it’s because I talk 10 hours a day… Otherwise we are fine.

I had some chat about the situation ”out there” in local restaurant business and it is not looking good. It’s a full stop to many businesses right now. I promise, as soon as I am out, I’ll start to organize #coronasurvivor dinners in the local restaurants! Can’t wait to start!

Pelastetaan kalaympyrä!

 

Kaskiksen Kalaympyrä vuodelta 5 ennen koronavirusta.

Ravintola-ala on sydäntäni lähellä, sekä taustani että harrastukseni vuoksi. Normaalisti syön ravintoloissa käytännössä viidesti viikossa. Lounasta melkein joka päivä ja päälle illallinen silloin tällöin. Turku on ollut herkuttelijan pyhiinvaelluskohde jo useamman vuoden. Urheilua harrastan lähinnä voidakseni syödä enemmän kuin on perus metabolia kuluttaa.

Mutta mitä meillä on muutaman kuukauden päästä?

Juttelin aiheesta kaverini Erik Mansikan kanssa.

”Viikko sitten perjantaiksi oli 180 varausta, nyt niitä on 18 ja peruutuksia tulee koko ajan. Tänään meillä oli 100 hengen salissa yksi kahden hengen varaus ja lopulta ruokailijoita oli neljä. Kakolanruusu oli tänään varmaan maailman turvallisin paikka syödä. Väliä oli seuraaviin ruokailijoihin 50 metriä. Kaskiksessa on aina ollut kolmen kuukauden jono kello seiskan lähtöihin. Nyt voit tuoda melkein koska tahansa 35 parasta kaveriasi. Valitset vain päivän.”

Tämä on siis tilannekuva tältä päivältä Suomen ja Turun parhaimpiin kuuluvissa Kaskiksessa ja Kakolanruusussa. Edessä on katastrofi. Erikin mukaan Tanska ja Ruotsi korvaavat 75-100% ravintoloiden palkoista ja vuokrista. Suomessa 0%. Erikillä on ravintoloihinsa jopa epidemiavakuutus, mutta – yllätys kyllä – se ei korvaa nyt epidemian aiheuttamia vahinkoja, koska kyseessä on poikkeustilanne.

Mikä on sellainen epidemia, joka ei olisi poikkeustilanne? Veikkaan, että jollain alalla on ollut paremmat lobbarit kuin ravintola-alalla.

Sääliksi käy, mutta sääli on sairautta. Siitä ei ole tippaakaan apua.

Lupaan, että kun täältä eristyksestä vapaudun, niin syön viikon putkeen Kaskiksessa ja Kakolassa. Toiseksi viikoksi siirryn sitten johonkin toiseen turkulaisravintolaan. Vaikkapa Luduun, Blankoon, Mamiin, Fontanaan tai Tintåån. Tästä tulee minun #kaskischallenge

Meillä karanteenia on jäljellä enää kahdeksan päivää. Kai sitten saa käydä ravintoloissa? Pikkuhiljaa meitä parantuneita alkaa ilmestyä katukuvaan yhä enemmän. Ei kai rajoitukset jo taudin kärsineitä koske? Saammekohan hihamerkit, jotka oikeuttavat liikkumaan ja kokoontumaan yli 10 hengen ryhmiin? Silloin on aika alkaa järjestämään #coronasurvivor – pitoja. Kunnon illallisia, jossa syödään ja juodaan ikävät muistot pois – ja nuollaan yhdessä haavoja umpeen.

Toivottavasti Turussa silloin on vielä ravintoloita, joihin mennä. Juuri nyt maksaisin Kaskiksen kalaympyrästä ja Topin valitsemasta lasillisesta kylmää Rieslingiä vaikka satasen lautaselta.
